    Psoriasis is coupled with two words “Psora” and “iasis”. Psora means itch and iasis stands for condition. Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory and chronic autoimmune disorder of your skin ends up with hyper proliferation of the skin. 

    It influences both genders equally and may begin at any age group (often observed in people between 15 to 40 yrs of age) and about 2 - 3% of the world’s population. 

    This problem is not infectious and it classically affects areas within the elbows, knees, scalp, palms and soles of the feet but make a difference in any parts of the body and could be associated with discomfort, itching, irritation and pain.


    Signs and Symptoms of Psoriasis



    Red and scaly patches on the skin and skin redness around pustules and blisters.

    Inflammation, pain, itching, burning and dryness of skin.

    Bleeding skin patches.

    Exfoliation of skin - Loose silvery white scales.

    Emotional distress.

    Joint swelling, tenderness, and pain.

    Thickened, ridged nails and discoloration of nails.

    Hair-dandruff.

    Scaly lesions of the scalp and genital regions.

    Causes of Psoriasis


    The real reasons behind Psoriasis is still unknown. It really is believed that a combination of several factors plays a part in the development of this disease and they're -

    Immune - disorder.

    Vaccinations.

    Infections -  streptococcal, viral- HIV infection.

    Skin trauma / Injury and Wounds.

    Emotional / Psychological stress/ Mental stress.

    Sunburn - overexposure to sunlight.

    Metabolic factors - calcium deficiency.

    Hormonal factors - pregnancy.


    Drugs - Lithium, Chloroquine, Beta blockers / ACE inhibitors, NSAID (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs / pain-killers), Anti depressant, Corticosteroid drugs etc.

    Heredity / Genetic/ Environmental factor / Climatic changes.

    Food allergy, food poisoning and irregular food habits / consuming food that is too salty or too sour.

    Excessive intake of sea food, yoghurt, sour and salted food. 

    Consuming wrong combination of food items, opposite or contradictory foods/ incompatible foods (Viruddha - Aahar) - Addition of milk and fish, honey and hot water, milk and mango, banana and milk, fish and sugarcane juice, pork and honey, long pepper with curd, meat and honey, radish with jaggery, green leafy vegetables with milk, fruits and curd, barley, millets and grains with milk, sour and salty food etc.

    Tips and Life style changes in Psoriasis




    Reduce use of air conditioners.

    Use separate, clean clothes and towel for your use. Tight clothing can lead to discomfort, itching and irritation. Always select cotton wears.

    Avoid using hair - dyes, perfumes and deodorants.

    Avoid alcohol consumption, smoking and tobacco chewing.

    Do not suppress and reduce natural urges like urination, colon emptying etc.


    Avoid foods that can cause indigestion.

    Avoid sleeping in day time.

    Keep skin moist -  Apply a good deal of moisturizer on your skin.

    Gently remove dried out skin flakes without hurting the underlying skin.

    Avoid drying out of skin. Dry up skin causes to cracks which might bleed resulting in infections.

    Avoid over contact with sun - light.

    Few medications can exaggerate the psoriasis. Consult with your doctor prior to starting any medications.

    Hydrotherapy- 



    Drink lots of normal water.

    Warm water is employed for bathing and cleansing your skin

     to increase the blood flow. 

    Epsom salt add into your bath. 

    Avoid soap while bathing. Use BESAN flour instead of bath 

    soap.

    Usually avoid cool bath soon after a laborious work.


    Psoriasis Diet-



    The person must also control his diet and lifestyle to meet best results of Psoriasis management. A rigid diet management must be followed while taking the medications for psoriasis. 

    Say no to Yogurt, chilies, too much salted foods, refrigerated/chilled foods, fermented food, processed food, preserved foods, junk food, packed food, canned food, fast food, acidic  and sour foods, fried food, sugar,  spicy, pungent foods, eggs, meat, cold drinks, preserved juices, fruit jams, fine flour, red chilies, mushroom, ice cream, sauces, sweets, chocolates, bakery food items, citric fruits like lemon, orange etc., radish, apple, mango, grapes, tomato, pineapple, pickles, sesame, jaggery, curd, and fish. 


    Milk and fish, honey  and hot water, milk and  mango, banana and milk, fish and sugarcane juice, pork and honey, long pepper with curd, meat and honey, radish with jaggery, green leafy vegetables  with milk, jaggery and pork, honey, and pork are opposite foods, so must be better avoided.

    Include a lot of fresh green vegetables, salad, digestible and astringent food in your diet. Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, D and E, Phosphorus, Magnesium etc.

    Bottle gourd juice and drinking coconut water regularly may be beneficial to psoriasis.

    Avoid common salt. Use rock salt instead common salt.

    Reduce mental tension and stress  through light and regular exercise, Yoga and Meditation.

    Expose yourself to morning sunlight for 10 - 20 minutes on regularly base.

    Apply herbal moisturizer on affected areas to maintain the moisture levels of skin.

    Coconut oil, cashew nuts oil, linseed oil, sesame oil, castor oil, calendula oil, oregano oil, fish oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, garjan oil.  

    Apply it on the affected area.

    Panchakarma Therapy for Psoriasis -


    Removal of toxins from the body through Panchakarma, is a basic and simple body purification method, can be employed in treating Psoriasis and an ayurvedic method for complete body detoxification.
