    What's Tuberculosis/TB?

    Tuberculosis is a standout amongst the most widely recognized illness and furthermore known as  pulmonary tuberculosis, lung TB, Phthisis, Koch’s disease in modern medico term and Rajayakshma,Yakshma, kshay roga in Ayurvedic term.  It is a malady of poverty and a serious bacterial infection that generally affects lungs, but can also affect any part of the  body and additionally this is known as  extra pulmonary tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is usually caused by a bacteria called as mycobacterium tuberculosis and  most contagious diseases among people.



    Causes of Tuberculosis

    Due to Infection by mycobacterium tuberculosis.
    Patients suffers with AIDS, diabetes mellitus, cancer and  taking chemotherapy 
    due to low and weak  immunity.
    Excessive intake of fast food, junk food.
    Low socio-economic status - Poor diet , lack of essential nutrients, Malnutrition, lack of proper hygiene.
    Suppression of natural urges.
    Excessive and hard physical labour.
    Intake of incompatible food.
    Irregular meal timings.
    Excessive  sexual practices.
    Frequent contact with the Tuberculous patient  (due to droplet infection from speaking, spiting, Sneezing, coughing of Tuberculosis infected person).
    Heredity.

    Signs / Symptoms of Tuberculosis

    Fever / Pyrexia especially in the evening and sweating during night time.
    Pain in costal region, Chest Pain, Dyspnoea / Breathlessness, Cough with mucus / productive cough.
    Hemoptysis - Cough with blood / blood in the sputum.
    Burning sensation in palms and soles
    Indigestion, Anorexia /Decreased appetite.
    fatigue / Constant tired feeling, weight loss .
    Scrofulosis - Tender and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck .
    Headache .
     Meningitis.
    Hoarseness.
    Insomnia / Improper sleep.

    Tests and diagnosis

    X-ray  of chest.

    CT Scan of chest.

    Sputum tests-  for A.F.B.(Presence of acid-fast bacilli in the sputum)
    and Sputum culture.

    Mantoux test - Mantoux skin test also known as a tuberculin skin test.

    Biopsy of the affected lung tissue.

    Food to be Avoided by Tuberculous Patients

    Strong Tea/ Coffee.
    White Bread.
    Puddings.
    Pies.
    Condiments- Pickles / Sauce.
    Tinned food.
    Curd.
    Ripe banana.
    Guavas.
    Bringle.
    Fermented foods.
    Canned, and preserved foods.
    Junk foods.
    White bread.
    Refined white sugar .
    Refined cereals.
    Buttermilk.

    Recommended diet / Food to be taken by Tuberculosis Patients

    Plenty of Cow's milk.
    Goat’s milk.
    Butter.
    Turnips.
    Beet root.
    Spinach.
    Pulses especially black gram.
    Dried fruits especially raisins.
    Vitamin B6.
    Wheat.
    Grapes.
    Coconut.
    Pomegranate.
    Mango.
    Almond.
    Ghee.
    Meat.
    Eggs.
    Onion.
    Raw green leafy vegetables, and fresh and organic fruits.

    Other regimen and lifestyle modification 

    Complete bed rest is essential.
    Tuberculosis infected patients should be isolated and housed in an airy and great ventilated room where there is sufficient sunlight.
    No hard physical or mental work .
    Take regular sunbath. Sunlight is extremely important as bacteria of Tuberculosis are highly susceptible to direct sunlight.
    Sexual activities should be avoided as it can worsen the condition.
    You can wear a mask when people are around you and Cover your mouth and nose while speaking, sneezing and  coughing .
    Take sufficient night sleep and avoid day time sleeping.
    BCG vaccination in new born baby and children as well.
    Chyawanprash- Chyawanprash is one of the most established Ayurvedic formulations described in Ayurvedic text Charakasamhita and is given to the patient for taking benefits, since Chyawanprash is extremely helpful for treating tuberculosis.
    Avoid alcohol drinking and quit smoking.
