    Migraine - Ayurvedic management & Home Cures

    Migraine is explained in Ayurvedic texts as ARDHAVABHEDAK implies half sided headache or 

    one sided  headache  or pain of half part of the head, which is one of the most severe form  of headaches due 
    to extended neurological issues (excessive stimulation of brain and blood vessels). The initial clinical structure of symptoms includes throbbing headache, nausea and vomiting, and increased sensitivity to bright light and noisy loud sound. Migraine pain usually commences in the forehead, the side of the head or around the eyes and gradually deteriorates. Bright lights or loud noises can get aggravate the condition.


    Migraine causes

    Suppression of natural urges.

    Travelling.

    Indigestion and constipation.

    Fasting, skipping or missing a meal.

    Smoking - Smoking or exposure to smoke.

    Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages like wine, whisky, beer etc.

    Certain foods like egg, chocolates, nuts, peanut, avocado, banana, oily, spicy foods, butter, citrus fruits, onions, bakery products, dairy products, fermented foods, pickeled foods, heavy-to-digest foods, non-vegetarian foods, processed foods, fermented foods etc.

    Sensory input (Excessive stimulation or stress on sense organs) such as bright lights, loud noises, strong perfumes / solid smells.

    Menstrual cycle fluctuations due to changes in hormone levels - In females, it sometimes appears in just before or during menses and throughout the menopause changeover as well.

    Hormonal drugs like oral contraceptives / birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy.

    Long term sitting in front of  Laptop / T.V.  screens.

    Changes in sleeping patterns – excess  or less sleep.

    Physical or mental stress, anxiety, emotions, anger, jealousy, grief etc.

    Prolonged exposure to sunlight.

    Sudden stoppage of caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee.

    Allergic reactions and susceptibility.

    Changing  in climate or weather.

    Symptoms of migraine

    Visual issues - blind spot in front of eyes, obscured vision, blurred vision, or two-fold vision etc.

    Severe Headache beginning  with forehead or pain on one side of the head or over the eyebrows.

    Gentle disarray and mild confusion.

    Sensitivity to light and sound.


    Fatigue - Weariness and tiredness of the body.

    Entire body ache.

    Irritability.

    Hearing troubles.

    Giddiness.

    Slurred speech.

    Trouble  in swallowing.

    Tingling  sensation in upper and lower extremities (legs or arms).

    Hyperactivity, acidity, constipation or diarrhoea.

    Mental depression.

    Sensitivity to noisy  sounds, light, strong smell etc.

    Increased urination.

    Neck rigidity / stiffness sometimes.

    Ayurvedic Methodology, Diet & Lifestyle Advice for Migraine Patients

    Maintain a strategic distance from hot, spicy foods, fast food, junk food, fermented foods, green chilli, white sugar, white flour, sour or citrus fruits, refined foods, animal products like meat, fish, dairy etc., junk food, since they aggravate the Pitta in your body.

    Lessen the consumption of tea and coffee.

    Way of Lifestyle adjustment, improvement and modifications - Do light excercise, morning walk in natural air, Yoga, Meditation, Pranayam to minimizing stress are very essential in treating migraine headaches.

    Keep up a normal sleeping for no less than 7 - 8  hours during the night.

    Taking a rest in a darkened room can help alleviate symptoms and can be considered an essential and basic migraine treatment at home.

    Try to bring down the screen brightness of electronic devices like computer, laptop, android phone, and television and so on while using them.

    Give up smoking and alcohol consumption.

    Avoid constipation.

    Keep away from fasting or skipping meal.

    Drink sufficient  water.

    Intake more fiber, organic fruits, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains.

    Avoid direct sun light exposure. For this reason, utilize an umbrella, sun-glasses  or cap to protect yourself from direct Sun.

    Use a very mild deodorant, perfume, scent or body spray.

    Try not to hear noisy sounds.

    Stay away from stress, night awakening,  travel and make an effort to control your anger.

    Bathing with too warm water or too cold water may be harmful.

    Use following vitamins and minerals to get benefited in Migraine management -
    Riboflavin / Vitamin B2 , Vitamin B6, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Magnesium, Potassium and so forth.

    Home Remedies to take care of  Migraine

    Apply a paste of  sandalwood powder blended with rose water is a superb solution for migraine headache or make a paste of clove powder mix with cinnamon oil and apply this on forehead.

    Have a teaspoon of coriander seed powder and blend  it in a glass of normal water. Leave it for whole night and drink it in the morning in empty stomach.

    Do mild  head massage with  Bhringraj, Jasmine,  Almond or Sesame Oil at bed time.
